What is EXIF GPS data?

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is metadata embedded in every photo taken by a smartphone or GPS-enabled camera. It records technical information: camera model, exposure settings, date and time — and often the GPS coordinates of where the photo was taken.

Most modern smartphones geotag photos by default unless location access is disabled. The GPS data is invisible in the image itself but readable by any EXIF tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I extract GPS from iPhone HEIC photos?

Yes. GPSwitch reads EXIF data from HEIC/HEIF files used by iPhone. The GPS coordinates are extracted in the same way as from JPEG. No conversion or intermediate step is required.

Is the photo uploaded to GPSwitch servers?

No. EXIF extraction happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your photo is never sent to any server. Processing is local, fast, and completely private.

What if my photo has no GPS data?

If a photo was taken with location access disabled, or if the GPS data was stripped (by social media platforms like Instagram or Facebook), GPSwitch will indicate that no GPS EXIF data was found.
